Jadon Sancho admits he was a boyhood Chelsea fan

Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho has admitted he was a Chelsea fan when he was growing up.

Sancho will line up against Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham when Borussia Dortmund travel to Wembley for their Champions League last-16 first leg on Wednesday night.

Will Spurs be able to stop Sancho? Five key things to know…

  1. Sancho played 260 minutes in the Champions League group stages, scoring one goal and providing one assist in five appearances.
  2. His influence in the Dortmund team has grown throughout the season, in which he has been one of the standout players in the Bundesliga.
  3. Dortmund captain Marco Reus is set to miss the trip to London with a thigh injury.
  4. Sancho, who scored in a 3-3 draw with Hoffenheim over the weekend, is expected to start against Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
  5. The 18-year-old has scored eight goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions this term.

Sancho was born in Camberwell, south London and lived in the capital until he joined Watford at the age of 11, which required him to move to Hertfordshire, before joining Manchester City in 2015.

The teenager referred to London as his “hometown” in a recent interview with the Telegraph, during which he was quizzed about rumours of his boyhood love for Chelsea.

Asked if he supported the Blues growing up, Sancho said: “Yeah, it’s correct. I’m not going to lie.”

Sancho: It will be more difficult for Spurs

Both Tottenham and Dortmund will be without key players when they clash on Wednesday night.

Reus is a big loss for the Dortmund. The Bundesliga front-runners lacked his leadership when they threw away a three-goal lead against Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Spurs haven’t missed Harry Kane in the league, winning each of their last four matches, but back-to-back cup exits last month suggest overcoming Dortmund without their talisman could be tough.

Jadon Sancho is the second youngest English player in the Champions League era to score a goal in the competition: 18 years and 212 days old.

And Sancho, who forgot his passport en route to the capital, thinks Tottenham won’t find it as easy to beat Dortmund this season as they did last year.

“I feel like we have improved from last season so it won’t be the same match as last year,” he added.

“I think it will be more difficult for them. Especially as they have some big players missing out so it is going to be a tough one.”
